Mecklenburg County is the largest county by population in the MSA and state. Geographically the county is dominated by the city of Charlotte. The city of Charlotte now ranks as the 17th most populous city in the United States. Charlotte's interstate transportation system is a spoke and wheel with Interstate serving as an outer loop while Interstate 77 north-south , Interstate 85 west-northeast and State Highway 74 southeast-northwest provide access to outer parts of the city and its suburbs.

Charlotte is connected to other major hubs across the county via the Charlotte Douglas International Airport which is located just inside the loop on the eastern border of the city. Charlotte Douglas serves as American Airlines primary hub in the southeast. Uptown Charlotte serves as the driver of corporate, government and tourist activity within the MSA.

Uptown is home to both professional sports teams, as well as multiple hotels, restaurants and a rather happening nightlife. Roughly 2 miles south of Uptown, Carmel is an affluent white-collar suburban neighborhood with high-end residential housing, suburban office corridors, and retail shopping. Charlotte contains four major economic hubs: Uptown, Northlake northeast , University Place north and Southwestern Charlotte.

Uptown Charlotte is the hub of primary corporate operations and tourist activity in the city. The Bank of America Corporate Center is one of the largest and most well-known corporate anchors in the area. Two miles north of Uptown, the Northlake area houses the Wells Fargo distribution center, Carrier, the Coca Cola Bottling Plant, Home Depot Lumber Distribution Center, Nederman Americas headquarters and a large industrial park dedicated to companies in the trucking and transportation industry.

It is adjacent southeast of Mecklenburg County and north of the South Carolina border. The county seat Monroe has grown recently as a suburban outgrowth of Charlotte. Union County has some of the best ranked public schools in North Carolina, with 4 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 4 high schools ranked within the top 25 in the state.

Previously, Union County was known for its base for the Freedom Riders who were protesting violence by the Ku Klux Klan in the community. Monroe is the county seat and has a small population of roughly 30k, however, the greater county offers a workforce in excess of k although most commute to Mecklenburg County for work. Union County has the highest median housing value and highest median income out of all counties within the Charlotte MSA according to their economic development department.

Chester County, SC. Lancaster County, SC. York County, SC. Its county seat is York, and its largest city is Rock Hill. Rock Hill is home to three universities the largest of which is Winthrop University, as well as a tech-friendly district called "Knowledge Park".

The light rail system does not connect the two, however the Charlotte Area Transit system offers express bus service from Uptown Charlotte to Downtown Rock Hill.
